Pay hike for ‘kasambahay’

12:30 AM January 27, 2016

ILOILO CITY—Domestic helpers in Western Visayas will soon enjoy higher monthly salaries.

The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board has approved new minimum wage rates for the “kasambahay” in the region, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced last week.

In a wage order approved on Dec. 20 last year, the board raised by P500 the minimum monthly pay of domestic helpers, or from P2,000 to P2,500 for cities and first-class municipalities (annual income: over P450 million) and from P1,000 to P1,500 per month in other municipalities, according to the DOLE statement.

The order will take effect once it is affirmed by the National Wages and Productivity Commission and 15 days after it is published in a newspaper of regional circulation, according to Salome Siaton, officer in charge of DOLE Western Visayas. Nestor P. Burgos Jr., Inquirer Visayas
