QC residents report gas leak from factory

A GAS LEAK inside a Quezon City factory producing food additives and plastic inputs was reported on Sunday afternoon by residents who complained of a foul smell.

Authorities were alerted to the leak coming from the D&L Industries factory on Calle Industria in Barangay Bagumbayan, at 2:35 p.m. Sunday.

In a statement, the company said that fumes coming from one of its storage tanks containing monomer inside its Chemrez plastic plant circulated in the compound at 1:48 p.m.

It explained that the “fumes were caused by heat generated when monomer starts to polymerize.”

Monomer is a raw material used in producing polystyrene plastic pellets. Supt. Jesus Fernandez, the Quezon City fire marshal, said that they did not receive any report of casualties or injuries among residents due to the leak.

He added that a special reaction unit from the Libis fire station was deployed to the area to assist the company’s own firefighters in dealing with the problem.

The company said that it expected the fumes in the area to have dissipated by 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Jovic Yee
