Asean writers forum

THE University of San Carlos Cebuano Studies Center and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will hold the first Great Asean Writers series at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Oct. 8 at the Bryant George Hall, Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center.

The forum aims to examine the role and significance of notable Southeast Asian writers, like Indonesia’s Pramoedya Ananta Toer and the Philippines’ Jose Rizal, in the development of regional literatures.

Topics include “The Wayang Kulit as a Narrative Framework” by Dr. Adelaida F. Lucero, “Translating the Nation: Rizal, the Novel, and the Philippine Literatures in the Region” by Dr. Jose Neil C. Garcia, “The Pessimistic Socialism of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Buru Tetralogy by Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu and “A Postcolonial Reading of Renato Madrid’s Selected Short Fiction” by Haidee Emmie K. Palapar.

The Great Asean Writers series is supported by the Cebu City government. It seeks to promote Asean and culture to the world.

A series of lectures is set to take place every October in the following years.

sextortion seminar

THE Philippine Women Judges Association (PWJA) will hold a seminar-workshop today, Oct. 7 at Robinland in North Reclamation Area, Mandaue City.

The seminar will disseminate the anti-sextortion toolkit, a guide on how to deal with and process cases of sextortion.

The anti-sextortion toolkit was developed by the PWJA in coordination with the International Association of Women Judges, with the support of the MDG3 Fund of Netherlands. Sextortion is the term used to describe the abuse of power or authority to extract sex or for sexual exploitation.

Barangay officials, representatives from the Women’s and Children’s Police Desk, teachers, public prosecutors, government and non-governmental organizations will attend the activity.

seminar on sustainable energy

THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Central Visayas Energy Audit Team (CVEAT), will hold an awareness seminar on sustainable energy management system today from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Magallanes-Colon Hall of City Sports Club Cebu.

The team of engineers Edilberto Paradela, Roberto Edra, Juan Edgar Osorio and Jose Mari Bigornia from CVEAT, together with Philip Tan from Wellmade Motors and Development Corp., will be the speakers.

The seminar aims to promote awareness in saving energy in an organization. The seminar is also an avenue for participants to better understand corporate roles and involvement in the implementation of sustainable energy management system.

The registration fee is P999, inclusive of workshop kit, coffee break, buffet lunch, afternoon snack and workshop certificate.

handwashing activity at SM

A simultaneous handwashing activity will happen on Oct. 14 in all SM Supermalls nationwide.

It will promote proper hand washing to prevent sickness and illnesses caused by viruses.

In SM City Cebu, the event will be held at the Event Centre beginning at 10 a.m.

Representatives from Cebu City Health department will lead the ceremonial handwashing together with the Department of Education and Cebu City government.
