NBI probes killing of CNN Philippines cameraman

The National Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into the killing of the CNN Philippines cameraman Jonathan Oldan who was shot to death in Imus, Cavite on Thursday.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said a team from NBI’s Death Investigation Unit was dispatched to investigate immediately after the 29-year-old Oldan was killed.

“Part of their assignment is to preliminarily determine whether the killing is work-related, subject to further evaluation by the Administrative Order no. 35 TWG (technical working group) Secretariat,” De Lima said in a text message.

An inter-agency committee was formed under AO 35 last year to look into media killings, enforced disappearance and torture cases.

Oldan was on his way to report to work in Manila when he was shot several times in the head by still unidentified gunmen in Barangay (village) Pinagbuklod around 5:15 a.m.

If Oldan’s shooting would be proven to be work related, De Lima said his case will be assigned to a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The SIT will then be monitored by the Special Oversight Team (SOT) as among the existing mechanisms under AO35.
