Lacson asks Aquino to convene Nat’l Security Council
Former Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Friday suggested that President Benigno Aquino III convene the National Security Council (NSC) immediately for discussion of options for the Philippines in case of a security crisis caused by China’s increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea.
A tense radio exchange between a US spy plane and the Chinese Navy in the Spratly archipelago on Wednesday “says a lot,” Lacson said.
“I think the US is sending a strong signal to China and the international community that these new developments have serious geopolitical and security implications,” Lacson said in a text message to reporters.
Potential security crisis
Such encounters could lead to a confrontation, he said.
Article continues after this advertisement“My concern is, it only takes an aggressive action from any party in interest, no matter how insignificant, to spark a dangerous armed confrontation that could lead to war,” Lacson said.
Article continues after this advertisementA meeting of the NSC would be a good opportunity for the Philippines to discuss the South China Sea dispute and look for options in dealing with a potential security crisis, he said.
“Planning ahead of a potential security crisis will serve best our country’s interest. This is a serious issue that needs study and enlightened discussion among our security officials and top policymakers,” he added.
