Today, May 1, is the 103rd birth anniversary of National Artist for Music Felipe Padilla de Leon. A known composer, conductor and scholar, he received many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Merit in 1961, the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1971, the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila in 1971, and the First Cultural Achievement Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1975. De Leon died on Dec. 5, 1992, and was conferred posthumously the title of National Artist in 1997. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
