Fire reignites at iconic restaurant

/ 11:45 PM April 24, 2015

The iconic Savory restaurant on Escolta Street, Manila, again caught fire early Friday, 13 hours after the first blaze was declared out. City fire marshal Supt. Jaime Ramirez said the top floor of the three-story building housing the restaurant was in flames starting 4:20 a.m. and firefighters took four hours to put the fire out. The first fire Thursday morning started at the kitchen on the ground floor, while the second fire started at an upper area left untouched by the first, Ramirez noted. About P25-million worth of property were lost in the earlier blaze. In a Facebook post, the management of the 65-year-old restaurant thanked patrons who called and offered to help. “[We are] thankful that everyone made it out safely and no one got hurt. Savory Escolta has been the home of much of our fondest memories,” it said. “Tough time, hearts are heavy—but hearing and reading all your stories of how The Original Savory 1950 has been distinctly part of your life continue to keep us afloat through these most trying times.’’ Jovic Yee
