Today, Jan. 22, is the 105th birth anniversary of National Artist for Painting Vicente Manansala. Born in 1910, Manansala is recognized as one of the artists at the forefront of the modernist movement in the country. In 1951, he held his first one-person show at the Manila Hotel. He received the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1963 and the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila in 1970. Manansala died on Aug. 22, 1981, and was posthumously conferred the title of national artist on Aug. 27, 1981. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
