‘Amang’ makes landfall in Eastern Samar; Metro Manila under Signal No. 1

MANILA, Philippines—Tropical Storm “Amang” made landfall over Dolores, Eastern Samar, and is traversing Northern Samar Saturday afternoon shortly after Pope Francis left.

In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Amang has maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour and gusts of 130 kph while tracking a northwest path at 19 kph.

Pope Francis was in Leyte Saturday morning to celebrate Mass with the survivors of Supertyphoon “Yolanda.”

His Holiness had to leave Visayas at 1 p.m., instead of 5 p.m. in the original schedule, after the pilots warned of strong winds and heavy rains.

Pagasa said Amang was last spotted 4 p.m. at 60 km north-northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar.

Public Storm Signal No. 2 was hoisted in Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Southern Quezon including Polillo Island, Sorsogon, Masbate, Burias Island including Ticao Island, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar and Biliran.

Areas under Storm Signal No. 1 are Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Batangas, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Quirino, Isabela, rest of Quezon, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro and Romblon, Leyte, Southern Leyte, extreme Northern Cebu including Bantayan Island and Camotes Island.

Winds of 61 to 100 kph would be experienced in areas under Signal No. 2 in the next 24 hours while areas under Signal No. 1 would experience winds of 30 to 60 kph in the next 36 hours.
