North Cotabato village chief shot dead

COTABATO CITY, Philippines – A barangay (village) chairman in Carmen, North Cotabato, was killed by still unidentified gunmen Monday afternoon while he was heading for home, police said.

Senior Insp. Basilio Parcon, Carmen town police chief, identified the victim as Eleazar Pilapil of Barangay Ugalingan, a farming village north of Carmen Poblacion.

Parcon told reporters that Pilapil was driving a motorbike en route to Barangay Ugalingan when two men riding tandem on a separate motorbike tailed him.

Along the highway leading to his barangay, the two men shot Pilapil three times, hitting him in the back. Passersby rushed him to hospital where he expired three hours later.

Parcon said Pilapil had been receiving threats to his life but he refused security escorts.

The police chief would not say if the threat was work related or personal.
