Tropical storm ‘Halong’ now a typhoon

MANILA, Philippines—Tropical storm “Halong” spotted outside the country has intensified into a typhoon, the state weather bureau said Saturday.

As of 4 a.m., Halong was spotted at 1,440 kilometers east of Central Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 150 kilometers per hour, weather observer Elvie Enriquez told INQUIRER.net

Enriquez said Halong was forecast to move slowly west-northwest but was not expected to make landfall.

She said the typhoon was expected to enter the Philippine Area of Philippines (PAR) on Sunday evening or Monday morning.

According to her, the typhoon would be named “Jose” once it enters PAR.

In its weather bulletin for Saturday, it said Metro Manila, Calamba, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon (Calabarzon),Cordillera and the provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, Zambales and Bataan would experience occasional rains.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms, it added.
