Tsunami warning issued for Alaska after powerful quake

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Alaska’s Aleutian Island chain after a powerful earthquake.

The US Geological Survey said a magnitude-7.1 quake was recorded at 12:53 p.m. local time Monday. It was centered about 13 miles (21 kilometers) southeast of Little Sitkin Island.

The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Alaska. It stretches from Nikolski to Attu.

The center also issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas from Nikolski to Unimak Pass.
