MANILA, Philippines–Filipinos should also not vote for “learned but corrupt” people, Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said on Friday.

Sotto was reacting to President Benigno Aquino III’s call on Filipinos Thursday to vote for candidates who can fight for the interest of every citizen, and not those who are only “good at reading scripts, dancing or singing.”

“He is right, if these performers, script readers and entertainers do not serve the interest of the public,” Sotto, who was a product of show business, said in a text message when sought for comment.

“In much the same way as not to vote for learned but corrupt people,” he added.

But the senator said he was not at all offended nor feel alluded to by Aquino’s statement, noting how he has been serving the interest of the people and the country by openly fighting illegal drugs.

“Aside from yours truly, is there anyone else openly fighting the drug dealers and dangerous drugs in the country?” Sotto asked.

“Is that not serving the interest of the country and the people? So why will I be offended? I don’t feel alluded to,” he further said.

Inquirer.net also tried but failed to get the reaction of Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, who are also both from the showbiz industry.
