LRT 1,2 to launch express service as upsurge of student passengers seen
MANILA, Philippines—The Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines 1 and 2 would deploy express trains or “skip trains” to address the upsurge of passengers in the coming school year, an official said.
During Wednesday’s transportation committee hearing in the House of Representatives, Deputy Administrator Emerson Benitez said they would follow this set-up for the duration of the school year 2014 to 2015.
He added that the LRT administration would also add more security personnel.
Skip trains usually transport commuters from stations that are heavily loaded to specified destinations.
According to Benitez, during the school period, at least 20 percent of 500,000 daily passengers in the LRT-1 are students. Line 1 runs from Roosevelt to Baclaran.
