Int’l forum prompts Pasay to go after teen thieves

The Pasay police has renewed its drive against “Batang Hamog” or teen robbers who rob people inside vehicles caught in heavy traffic.

In a statement, Mayor Antonino Calixto said the intensified campaign of the Pasay police was timely as the city was preparing for the 23rd World Economic Forum on East Asia to be held from May 21 to 23 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

“We are not only focusing our efforts on beautification projects that will visually enhance our city but we are also concerned with the safety of our guests, tourists, motorists and commuters,” he added.

According to the police, the Batang Hamog dart in and out of heavy traffic, looking for motorists to rob. When they chance upon a vehicle with unlocked doors, they steal from its occupants. At times, they distract the vehicle owner, provoking him until he steps out of his vehicle, leaving their cohorts free to grab the driver’s unguarded valuables.

FEATURED STORIES

Pasay police chief Senior Supt. Florencio Ortilla said that they were conducting a series of operations to round up these teenage robbers, most of whom were between seven to 16 years old.

Those apprehended would be turned over to the city social welfare and development office, he added.
