Aquino names new NBI chief

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III has appointed Deputy Director Virgilio Mendez as the new head of the National Bureau of Investigation.

Mendez replaces lawyer Medardo de Lemos who was appointed by Justice Secretary Leila De Lima as head of the NBI in an OIC capacity after NBI chief Nonnatus Rojas resigned in September.

Rojas tendered his irrevocable resignation after Aquino announced that charges were being readied against two NBI officials, who allegedly tipped off Janet Lim-Napoles, alleged mastermind in the pork barrel scam, about an arrest order issued  against her on August 14.
