QCPD chief vows to have cop who shot bystander axed

MANILA, Philippines — A top official of the Quezon City Police District on Monday promised to pursue charges against a policeman who accidentally shot and injured a bystander on New Year’s Day and ensure his dismissal from the service

Sagun has managed to remain in service despite an earlier case in 2011.

Speaking after the unsealing of policemen’s guns after the New Year, the official said Sagun would be dealt with the “full force of disciplinary action” since he committed a serious offense.

“I believe he was given a punishment for the earlier offense but with this new offense, we will monitor his case so he could be removed from the service the soonest possible time,” Albano said.

Albano on Monday led the removal of the tape on policemen’s guns and the destruction of P60,000 worth of seized illegal firecrackers.

Sagun accidentally shot a motorcycle rider while chasing a group of young men who picked on his relatives. The fiscal eventually approved the filing of a frustrated murder case.

In detention, Sagun was served an arrest warrant issued on April 2013 for a 2011 attempted murder case.

In September 2011, Sagun, then assigned to the Batasan police station, fired his M16 at a retired policeman whom he accused of spray-painting the words “Senior Pulis Patola” on his house.

He posted a P120,000 bail on Friday before Judge Caridad Walse-Lutero of Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 223 and was released last weekend.
