THE UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars notched their second win of the season after they outlasted the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 79-68, behind a stellar fourth-period showing by Ricky Cuyos in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Cuyos had 10 of his 18 points in the deciding canto including several key baskets that deadened USC’s comeback attempts down the stretch.

Joerio Mumar led USJ-R with 19 while Carl Viajar added 16 to push the Baby Jaguars’ record to 2-5 (win-loss) heading to the close of the first round today.

It was a tight game for the first two periods and a half when USJ-R started to hit their stride behind three-pointers by Viajar and Cuyos that allowed them to lead by five, 56-51, heading to the fourth period.

USC crept to within one, 57-58, at the start of the final frame behind back-to-back baskets by Cielito Plenos but USJ-R responded with a 9-2 run of their own, which featured two leaners by Cuyos and a short jumper by Drexcel Subing-Subing that gave them a 67-59 advantage.

The closest that the Baby Warriors were able to get was six on two occasions with under a minute left. But USJ-R had an answer every single time.
