MANILA, Philippines—A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern Philippine island of Mindanao early Tuesday, seismologists said, with no immediate reports of damage.

The quake hit at 3:13 a.m. (1913 GMT Monday) some 160 kilometers (100 miles) east-southeast of the city of General Santos at a depth of 35 kilometers, the US Geological Survey said.

The Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes take place.
