When security takes a hit

The arrival of the “ber” months in September means that Christmas songs will start playing  in radio stations.

These months also signal that criminal elements are  on the move to victimize banks, pawnshops and ordinary citizens on the street.

Yesterday’s foiled robbery that claimed the lives of three robbers and two security escorts of a ChinaBank teller who was about to deliver  P1.2- million  cash to a money changer outlet in Robinsons Place is one such incident.

Cebu City police should be commended for their quick response and chase.

But also remember that if it weren’t for the random passing by of a patrol vehicle, the security guards of the armored van were sitting ducks.

The shoot-out was  a grim reminder that extra vigilance is needed in cash-rich establishments and that robbery gangs are getting bolder.

The Monday-morning work rush didn’t stop this group from trying to knock off a money changer outlet, which, like money remittance centers, are less difficult to rob than a bank. The target is also a four-lane road away from the Fuente police substation.  =

The Cebu City police chief said the perpetrators came from Ozamiz City in Mindanao, base of the dreaded   Kuratong Baleleng gang, a  syndicate whose reach extends  to Metro Manila.

The robbers had their lookouts and no qualms about stealing in broad daylight.

The brazen operation  couldn’t have been done without insider information.  This is something the police will have to investigate further.

Knowing the drop-off schedule of a  P1.2-million cash delivery  escorted by a single security guard and one backup was a strategic advantage.

Cebu City officials may do well to call a meeting with local police and owners of commercial establishments to discuss extra security guidelines with the approach of the holidays.

Adding armed escorts and reminding stores to step up plans for  security cameras in high-risk areas  would make for a safer metropolis.

Whether they come from Mindanao or are natives of Cebu, robbers will prey on the unsuspecting when the opportunity presents itself even if there is security in place.
