List of 53 areas under Supertyphoon ‘Yolanda’ signals

MANILA, Philippines—At least 53 areas from Luzon to Mindanao were placed under storm signals on Thursday night as Superyyphoon “Yolanda” (International name: “Haiyan”) was expected to make landfall Friday morning.

Signal number 4, the strongest storm signal, has been raised in Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Biliran, according to the 10 p.m. weather bulletin of the state weather bureau.

The areas of extreme northern Cebu including Bantayan Island, Capiz, Aklan, Northern Antique and Northern Iloilo are also under signal No. 4.

Meanwhile, signal No. 3 has been raised in Ticao Island, Sorsogon, Romblon, Calamian Group of Islands, rest of Antique, rest of Iloilo, Guimaras, Northern Negros Occidental, Northern Negros Oriental, Bohol, Norther Cebu including Cebu City, Camotes Island, Siargao Island, and Dinagat province.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) located the eye of Yolanda at 290 km east southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, as of 10 p.m. Thursday.

Yolanda continues to have winds of 225 kilometers per hour with gustiness of up to 260 kph. It has also maintained its speed at 39 kph moving in a west northwest direction.

Pagasa said that the 600-km wide Yolanda will make landfall Friday at 5 a.m. at Guiuan.

Signal No. 2 has been hoisted over Mindoro Provinces, Marinduque, Albay, extreme northern Palawan, Burias islands, rest of Negros Occidental, rest of Negros Oriental, Siquijor, rest of Cebu, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte.

Signal No. 1 has been raised in Metro Manila, Bataan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Southern Quezon, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Lubang Island, rest of Northern Palawan including Puerto Princesa, Misamis Oriental, and Agusan del Sur.

Several cities and provinces have already declared the cancellation of classes in preparation of Yolanda.
