High blood sugar lands Imelda Marcos in hospital

MANILA, Philippines—Former first lady and now Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos was admitted to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City on Sunday due to high blood sugar levels, a hospital official said.

Marilen Lagniton, vice president for communication of St. Luke’s Medical Center, told the Inquirer by phone that Marcos, 84, was confined in one of the hospital rooms for blood sugar tests.

“According to Marcos’ doctor, Joven Cuanang, they are just controlling her blood sugar levels,” Lagniton said.

Bebot Diaz, Marcos’ chief of staff, earlier said the former first lady was scheduled for a regular checkup as “old folks” usually do.

Diaz said Marcos was diagnosed with high blood sugar levels and was asked to stay longer for more tests. He said she was expected to leave the hospital Sunday night. “Nothing serious,” Diaz said.

In July, Marcos was reported to have suffered a minor injury after she slipped and fell on the floor of the House of Representatives a few hours before the President’s State of the Nation Address.

She immediately recovered after the accident.
