Food poisoning case puts Iloilo execs on alert
ILOILO CITY—Health officials have tightened their watch over food establishments in this city after one person died and 60 others fell ill due to suspected food poisoning last week.
Dr. Urminico Baronda Jr., city health officer, said compliance with sanitary and other health standards, including those for food and drink preparation, would be checked.
Baronda had ordered the temporary closure of the Dakasi milk tea outlet in Barangay (village) San Rafael in Mandurriao District on Sept. 26 after clients of the establishment fell ill.
The victims experienced vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pains and fever, which are symptoms of food poisoning.
Owners of the establishment had said they would wait for results of an investigation being conducted by the Department of Health before issuing any detailed statement.
Dr. Glen Alonsabe, regional epidemiologist, said the list of 60 reported victims included only those who sought treatment or were confined in hospitals.
