USJ-R wins Final 4 opener in Cesafi men’s volley
THE UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Spiking Jaguars rebounded from their disastrous end in the elimination round by starting the semifinal round on a high note, beating the Southwestern University (SWU) in the men’s division of the 2013 Cesafi volleyball tournament on Friday night at the Aznar Coliseum.
Defeated during the final day of the elimination by rivals University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F), the wards of local legend Grace Antigua settled down in the face of a gallant stand by the homecourt-toting Spiking Cobras to emerge with the thrilling 29-27, 25-21, 25-20 win.
In the boys’ division, reigning champion USJ-R kept its eye on a seat in the finals with a dominant 25-9, 25-13 win over Don Bosco.
Meanwhile in the games yesterday, the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) showed that its elimination round win over USJ-R was no fluke as it repeated over the former champions, 26-24, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, for its second win in as many games in this single round-robin semifinals.
In the girls’ division, top contender University of San Carlos (USC) put a stop to the two-game winning streak of SWU with a 25-17, 25-22 victory.
The top two teams at the end of this round will get to compete for the championship trophies. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
