Floods hit 3 Occidental Mindoro towns; over 2,000 flee to safe ground

CALAPAN CITY, Philippines — Flood spawned by the southwest monsoon rains hit three municipalities in Occidental Mindoro, namely Abra de Ilog, Sablayan and Mamburao Monday.

Eugene Cabrera, Mimaropa DRRMC chief, said the heavy rains affected 516 families (2,014 persons). He said of this number, 83 families (302 persons) were forced to stay in evacuation centers while the rest moved in with their relatives elsewhere.

“They are still advised to stay at the evacuation (centers) because even if it rains only occasionally, the weather brings a huge amount of rainfall,” he said

Recy Tesorio, a staff at the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council in Occidental Mindoro, said that in Abra de Ilog town, the floods affected the four villages of Tibay, Wawa, Armado and Iba.
