/ 06:39 AM September 21, 2013

OVER a hundred Mass Communication students from different colleges and universities in Cebu gathered at the Marcelo Fernan Press Center yesterday for the screening of the documentary We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks.

The documentary, directed by Academy-award winning director Alex Gibney made its debut in the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, USA last January. It tells the story of Wikileaks founder and now exiled whistle-blower Julian Assange, US Army whistle-blower Bradley Manning and other players in WikiLeaks, an international, online organization which publishes secret information, news leaks, and classified media from anonymous sources.

A panel discussion and open forum on the film followed with Eileen Mangubat, publisher and acting editor-in-chief of Cebu Daily News; BenCyrus Ellorin, CDN associate editor; and Jason Baguia, CDN columnist and UP-Cebu Mass Communication faculty member.

Mangubat said that the screening of the documentary may be the first here in Cebu. CDN multi-media coordinator and senior reporter Marian Codilla also introduced the news website www.cebudailynews.ph, which she said is more friendly to mobile users. Communication students and teachers from University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of the Visayas, Southwestern University and University of the Philippines-Cebu attended the film showing held at the Marcelo B. Fernan Press Center.
