QC urged to switch to e-jeeps

/ 03:33 AM September 12, 2013

A Quezon City councilor has proposed that the city government replace all its service vehicles with electricity-powered jeepneys and tricycles.

Ramon Medalla of the second district recently filed a resolution that would urge the Quezon City government to consider switching to e-jeepneys and e-tricycles.

Citing a provision in the Constitution that emphasizes the right of the citizenry to a healthful and balanced ecology on top of the Clean Air Act of 1999, Medalla said that “cars and petroleum-run vehicles have been identified as the largest contributors of air pollution in the world.”

He also said that the World Health Organization had included respiratory illnesses caused by air pollution among the top 10 global causes of death.

Medalla pointed out that the use of electricity-powered vehicles posed more advantages compared to those fueled by petroleum products, including virtually zero maintenance, environment-friendly and stable electric prices.

“It is [in the] best interest of the city and the welfare of its constituents to make it cleaner, greener, safer and economical by way of patronizing eco-friendly motor vehicles,” he said.
