Informal settlers fight off demolition in Quezon City

/ 07:13 PM August 26, 2011

MANILA, Philippines—Informal settlers were fighting off a team tearing down their shanties  in Barangay Balara along Commonwealth in Quezon City Friday, police said.

“There was disorder,” said Senior Police Officer 1 Alvin Lasam of Station 6 of the Quezon City Police, but said he has received reports of anyone being injured in the commotion.

The demolition, set to start at around 9 a.m., has been delayed because of the protesting settlers, said Lasam.

About 20 police officers were sent to ensure peace and order in the area, he said.
