UPLB now stands for UP ‘Laban sa Baboy’

SAN PEDRO, Laguna, Philippines—The public outrage against the pork barrel system has reached campuses outside Metro Manila and in Laguna, UPLB, which stands for University of the Philippines Los Baños, the acronym has a new meaning.

On Thursday, an alliance of college professors and students launched the UPLB or the “Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Laban sa Baboy,” a movement that calls for the abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), the pork barrel of senators and members of the House of Representatives.

It was organized by those who joined the Million People March on Aug. 26 at Rizal Park in Manila, said Ronalyn Franca, one of “UPLB” convenors and a senior Development Communication student.

Franca said a professor suggested calling the alliance Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Laban sa Baboy, which is composed of various student organizations.
