1 killed, 5 hurt as motorcycle slams into tricycle in Quezon town

LUCENA CITY, Philippines— One person was killed and five others were injured when a motorcycle collided with a tricycle along the Maharlika Highway in Tiaong, Quezon Wednesday night, police said.

Police Officer 3 Sherwin Bonsol, Tiaong police investigator, identified the fatality as Jay-R Abania, 25, and resident of Tiaong.

Investigators reported that a Celerino Mercado Jr. was onboard his motorcycle along the highway in Talisay village at 6:45 p.m. when it slammed head-on into the tricycle driven by Abania and four passengers on board

Bonsol said the motorcycle overtook the vehicle ahead of him and occupied the opposite lane, resulting in the deadly collision.

Police said the strong impact caused the tricycle’s sidecar to detach.

Abania was killed on the spot and his four passengers sustained serious injuries.

The motorcycle driver, despite wearing a crash helmet, also suffered serious injuries in the head and both legs.

All the casualties were rushed to Liwag Medical Clinic in Tiaong, said Bonsol.
