Marikina bridge undergoes repair

/ 10:58 PM August 24, 2011

Marikina authorities have started reconstructing Lilac Bridge located in a flood-prone area of the city.

The P14-million project in Barangay (village) Concepcion Dos, funded by the Office of Marikina Representative Miro Quimbo, entails demolition, dredging and reconstruction work.

Quimbo said the reconstruction is necessary to prevent road accidents and flooding in nearby areas. “Based on the assessment made by the City Engineering Office, this 30-year-old bridge is susceptible to collapse when heavy trucks use it,” he said.

A huge pile of mud and trash was also discovered below the bridge, clogging Balanti Creek and impeding the flow of water. Quimbo said they will elevate the reconstructed bridge to increase its load capacity. The city government hopes reopen the bridge on December 22.
