Vendors split on Tabunok market opening

HE thought that re-opening the old Tabunok market would solve the problem of Talisay City’s vendors.
But Talisay City Mayor Johnny delos Reyes isn’t so sure after meeting another group of vendors who opposed the re-opening and wanted to remain at the existing market building.
The mayor said he decided to re-open the Tabunok market after results of a secret balloting among vendors showed that majority favored transferring to the old Tabunok market.
But delos Reyes said he reminded the vendors that the city government would only pay for the lights and water and not shoulder the cost for repairs.
He added that the vendors agreed to leave the Tabunok market once the city gets funding for a new market building.
Nora Carlos, president of the Talisay City Vendors Association told reporters that many members recognized and identified Randy Campo as their leader.
She said the group is willing to wait for a new three-storey market while Campo’s group wanted the mayor to re-open the old Tabunok market.
Carlos said Campo’s group is supported by candidates who lost in last May’s elections.
“There are people who want to sow trouble,” she said.
The mayor chided his critics for trying to put down his administration.
“Mura lang gud na sila ug lamigas nga namaak sa akong tiil samtang nagtaud ko ug suga (They are like ants who bite my feet while i am busy putting the lights on),” delos Reyes said.
