Davide wants no-frills anniversary celebration

GOV. Hilario Davide III said he was not keen on celebrating next month’s founding anniversary of Cebu province with a formal ball as done by his predecessor.
The new governor said he found some of the events in the administration of former Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, such as the Governor’s Ball and the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo “too expensive and unnecessary.”
“We are still studying the activities because I think there are ones which are too expensive such as the Governor’s Ball which I heard was a very large party,” he told reporters yesterday.
He said he will review the programs with Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale.
Programs such as Pasigarbo sa Sugbo, he said, will also be examined carefully because although expensive, it also helps boost tourism in the tourism.
“The objective is how can we save and do away with unnecessary expenses. Everything will be weighed carefully,” he said.
1,000 classrooms
Meanwhile, Davide said he will ask help from the national government specifically from the Department of Education (Deped) to help provide more than a thousand classrooms for public schools.
Cebu Schools Superintendent Arden Monisit, who paid a courtesy call on Davide yesterday, said he is also asking the province to donate the lot of the Department of Education office at Sudlon, barangay Lahug.
Davide said he will meet with Education Secretary Armin Luistro to discuss the lack of classrooms in the province
He said he will also convene a School Board next week with Monisit who currently sits as chair.
