MANILA, Philippines – One soldier was killed and six others were wounded in an ambush staged by communist rebels early Tuesday in Northern Samar, the military said.

Lieutenant Colonel Noel Vestuir, Commanding Officer of the Army’s 20th Infantry Battalion, said that the insurgents detonated a roadside bomb as the soldiers passed by in Luisita village in Victoria town at about 4:30 a.m.

The fatality was not yet identified pending the notification of his family. The wounded soldiers, meanwhile, were brought to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Pursuit operations have been launched for the insurgents.
