Thailand, Cambodia reach cease-fire deal

/ 04:59 PM April 28, 2011

PHANOM DONGRAK, Thailand—Cambodian officials say their military commanders have reached a cease-fire agreement with their Thai counterparts that could end seven days of artillery duels along their border that have killed 15 people.

Cambodian government spokesman Phay Siphan says regional commanders from both Southeast Asian nations reached the deal after a 40 minute meeting at the border Thursday. He says they agreed to reopen border checkpoints shuttered during the skirmishes.

Thai officials could not immediately be reached for comment, but the contested border was quiet for most of the day Thursday after artillery fire boomed across the region earlier in the morning.
