ANIMAL DISPLAYS
The Cebu City Council was asked to pass an ordinance to prohibit the display of wildlife in malls, hotels, and even establishments which have permits from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Dr. Alice Utlang, city veterinarian, said the display of these animals for tourists may give children the wrong idea about environment protection.
“There are groups that display wild animals (in the establishments) as part of an education campaign but that’s not the right way. Animals that belong in the wild should be in the wild. They should not be chained there,” said Utlang./CNU Intern Nice Ann Teleron
NO PAY YET
More than 1,000 poll clerks who did election duty in two cities and five towns in Cebu Province have not yet been paid.
Article continues after this advertisementProvincial Comelec Assistant Arthur Patiga yesterday said the 1,178 Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) members from Badian, Asturias, Dumanjug, Catmon, Sibonga, Carcar City and Toledo City still had no cash cards needed to withdraw the P4,000 honorarium from partner banks.
Article continues after this advertisementPatiga said the Comelec started processing requests for cash cards but didn’t include those BEIs having family ties with running candidates.
The BEIs, however, would be paid personally through their election officers, said Eduardo Mejos, Finance Services director of Comelec Manila.
The P4,000 honorarium will be given through cash after the BEIs complete filling out a verification form provided by Comelec./Correspondent Peter Romanillos
GUNGOB CONCEDES
Defeated former mayor Avelino Gungob congratulated the newly proclaimed mayor of Consolacion town Teresa Alegado last Tuesday.
Gungob wrote Alegado that despite his doubts about the election results he would concede and respect the decision of the people of Consolacion.
Alegado garnered 27, 220 votes while Gungob got 23,917 votes.
“Even if I believe I won the elections I won’t force them to recognize me. I will respect their proclaiming Alegado as the mayor of Consolacion, Gungob said in Cebuano.
