2 Cebuanos wrest titles in Dunlop net

TWO Cebuano netters clinched titles in their respective categories in the 6th leg of the Dunlop Sport Junior Tennis Tournament held in Talibon, Bohol over the weekend.

Cebu City’s Marc Nicole Suson ruled the 12-and-under boys while Bantayan Island, Cebu’s Feb Wyndell Deja dominated the 14-and-under boys.

Suson outclassed Cagayan de Oro’s (CDO) Orland Patrick Garcia, 6-3, 6-3, for the 12-and-under title while Deja survived a super tiebreak against Jose Maria Pague of Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay, 3-6, 6-4, 14-12, to bring home the 14-under title.

The rest of the boys division titles were won by Tangub City’s Francis Dominic Lanzado and Sogod, Southern Leyte’s Ivan Dame Olo.

Lanzado blanked CDO’s Cassius Ryanne Maglinao in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, for the 16-under title.

Olo prevented Lanzado from going home with two titles after frustrating the latter, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, for the 18-under title.

The Boholanos ruled the girls division with three netters from Ubay, Bohol notching the titles in their respective categories.

The Ubayanon charge was led by Dawn Albert Uy, who pocketed the 18 and 16-under titles.

In the 18-under, Uy annihilated Inabanga, Bohol’s Denice Kaye Alota, 6-0,  6-0, while in the 16-under, Uy frustrated fellow Ubayanon Katrina Faye Uy, 6-1, 6-2.

The other Ubayanon titlist was Armida Gumapac, who survived a gruelling finals match against Siquijor’s Ellaine Rose Bahonsua, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 11-9 in the 12-under title fight.

It would have been a sweep for Ubay if Marisol Cuyno had not lost the 14-under title to Talibon, Bohol’s Jessa Maria Liquit, 0-6, 1-6.

The 10-year-under unisex title was won by Ozamiz City’s Ashton Benne Villanueva after defeating Surigao City’s Rupert Ohrelle Tortal, 4-0, 5-4 (7-3).  /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
