Marines guarding PCOS machines, NPA clash in Gingoog, 1 hurt

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines –Marines securing the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines clashed with New People’s Army rebels in Barangay (village) Samay in Gingoog City on Thursday morning.

Major Leo Bongosia, spokesperson of the 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, said a Marine was wounded in the brief clash.

Bongosia said more Marine personnel are now securing the polling centers in the hinterland villages of Gingoog City.

On April 21, NPA rebels fired at the convoy of Gingoog City Mayor Ruth Guingona, killing two of her civilian bodyguards and wounding the local chief executive.

The NPA had apologized to the mayor, saying it was an unfortunate incident.
