Army major killed, 4 soldiers hurt in ambush by suspected Abu Sayyaf men

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A military officer was killed while four soldiers were wounded in an ambush by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits in Al Barka town in Basilan on Monday afternoon.

Colonel Carlito Galvez, 104th Army Brigade commander, identified the fatality as Major Alin Kannung, executive officer of the 32nd Infantry Battalion.

Kannung and his men were on their way to the village of Bohe Piyang for a “Bayanihan” activity when ambushed.

“They were going to Al Barka to distribute livestock when ambushed by more or less 30 fully armed Abu Sayyaf members,” Galvez said.

He also confirmed earlier reports that four soldiers were wounded in the fighting that ensued.

Galvez said fighting was going on as of 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Vice Governor Al Rasheed Sakalahul said the soldiers were about to take part in medical, dental and civic activities with local government officials when attacked.
