Enrique Mendiola, in whose honor a street in Manila was named after, was born on May 3, 1859 in San Miguel, Manila. A pioneer in character education, he headed Instituto Burgos where he introduced a new method of teaching to emphasize character building. According to him, the greatness of a country depends largely on the character of the people. Named a member of the first UP Board of Regents in 1908, he died on March 30, 1914, at the age of 54.
