Cop killed while breaking up fight in QC bar

MANILA, Philippines—A policeman was killed on duty while trying to break up a fight in a Quezon city bar early Sunday morning, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said.

The victim was identified as Senior Police Officer 1 Reynaldo Mateo of police station 7 in Quezon city. The incident happened around 2 p.m. when elements of PS7 responded to a call about a disturbance at Padi’s Point bar in Araneta, Cubao.

Mateo was punched by Senior Sergeant Dominador Aguilar, member of the Philippine Air force. Mateo fell to the pavement, and lost consciousness, Cruz said.

Mateo was taken to Quirino Memorial Medical Center but was pronounced dead on arrival, he said.

Police are still investigating the incident. The suspects have been arrested.
