MANILA, Philippines —Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo said on Friday that whistleblower Senior Superintendent Rafael Santiago Jr. needs to report for his duty as a police officer or he would be considered AWOL.

“He is still part of the organization and he has  to comply with the rules and regulations of the organization,” said Robredo, adding Santiago has until Monday to report to Camp Crame.

He said that Santiago could be considered on AWOL if he would fail to report on the said date.
Robredo said the DILG was willing to provide him with protection and even a new assignment, if those were necessary for his return.

“If it’s necessary that we give him new assignment so he can be secured we will give him a new assignment but he has to report (for work),” said Robredo.

“We are after the truth as well,” said Robredo.

Santiago recently came forward with information on the alleged switching of election returns on the 2004 polls. He has not reported for work since he was relieved from his post as police director in the Zambales province and was reassigned to the PNP’s Directorate for Operations in Camp Crame.
