He never wanted to bring a gun with him, even if his job required that he carry a firearm.

But Allan Baysac’s fears came true when he accidentally shot and killed a teenage coworker with a fellow guard’s service revolver, thinking he had emptied the gun of its bullets.

Baysac, a watchman assigned at 168 Mall in Binondo, Manila, voluntarily surrendered on Monday to police at Manila Police District Meisic Station 11 after the death of 19-year-old Reymark Beboito, a janitor at the mall.

Beboito was declared dead by doctors at around 9 a.m on Monday, at the Jose Abad Santos Mother and Child Hospital where he was confined for the treatment of a bullet wound in the left side of the abdomen.

Baysac, who is detained at the MPD homicide section holding cell, said he regretted the incident.

He told the Inquirer that he had refused to be issued a gun by his security agency because he was afraid he would get involved in accidents involving a firearm.

MPD homicide section head Inspector Armando Macaraeg said Baysac had been entrusted a .38-cal. service revolver by a fellow security guard, who went out on a 30-minute break, while on duty at the mall on Sunday.

After he removed the bullets of the handgun, the security guard allegedly pulled at the trigger to make sure it was empty, but the revolver fired.

A bullet, which was apparently left in the revolver’s chamber, hit Beboito who was about to go home. Baysac immediately rushed the wounded teenager to the nearest hospital.

The guard is facing a charge of homicide through reckless imprudence in the City Prosecutor’s Office.
