Though highly urbanized, the National Capital Region still produced a finalist in Commonwealth High School in Quezon City, which converted what used to be a garbage area into a mini-forest park with all sorts of trees and plants replete with benches and even nipa huts.

“(They are) not schools with a forest park. Some can be described as schools within a forest,” Education Secretary Armin Luistro said during the awarding ceremony on Thursday at the Department of Education (DepEd) main office in Pasig City.

The 16 schools were among the 189 public schools that responded to the DepEd’s call in 2008 to grow trees for a school forest park.
