SC justice with strong Catholic ties takes on anti-RH law petition

MANILA, Philippines — A Supreme Court justice with strong ties to the Catholic Church has been assigned to handle the petition questioning the constitutionality of the controversial Reproductive Health Law.

The RH Law petition has been raffled off to Supreme Court Associate Justice Jose Catral Mendoza who gets to pen the decision on the case.

Mendoza hails from Lipa City, Batangas where the archdiocese is a staunch anti-RH advocate.

Mendoza, the eldest of 8, has two brothers who are priests and another who is a parish assistant.

The anti-RH petition was filed by couple James and Lovely Imbong on behalf of their minor children. James is the son of CBCP Lawyer Jo Imbong.

In their petition, the Imbongs want the high court to nullify the law for allegedly violating the 1987 Constitution.
