BACOLOD CITY—Two senators have shot down a plan to file an impeachment complaint against President Benigno Aquino III, saying it would not prosper.

Senator Gregorio Honasan on Thursday said he saw no basis for an impeachment move or a coup attempt against Mr. Aquino, noting the leader’s high popularity.

“I see no basis for this since the President and his government continuously enjoy a very high trust rating and this is borne out by the surveys,” said Honasan, who was in Bacolod City for the 4th Visayas Island Congress of the Vice Mayor’s League of the Philippines.

Senator Vicente Sotto III, who also attended the conference, said he too did not think any attempt to impeach Mr. Aquino would prosper.

Those who are calling for the President’s ouster should give him a chance since he had only served for a year, he added.
