AFP seeks Christmas truce with NPA rebels

/ 03:54 PM December 04, 2012

MANILA, Philippines – The Armed Forces of the Philippines is recommending a Christmas ceasefire or suspension of offensive military operations (somo) with New People’s Army rebels.

“Actually, I still have to ask the Secretary of National Defense and the President regarding this matter,” General Jessie Dellosa told reporters. “The authority will come from the President.”

Dellosa added that the ceasefire might be of the same length as in 2011. Last year, a Christmas truce was called from December 16 to January 2.

“At least everybody will enjoy Christmas, our soldiers and even those in the mountains (rebels) at least will be able to enjoy Christmas,” he said.

The ceasefire is also an opportunity for rebels to return to the folds of law, Dellosa added.
