Trader killed after fighting 2 robbers in Manila

MANILA, Philippines—A 62-year-old trader was shot and killed by robbers whom he tried to fight off in Manila early Monday, police said.

Police Officer 3 Henry Navarro of Manila Police District’s homicide division said the victim, Leonardo Yap Chua, was killed by two unidentified motorcycle-riding men.

Initial investigation, he said, showed the victim was inside a Nissan Patrol (BCT 678) parked in front of his brother’s house on Aliw-Iw Street in Sta. Mesa, Manila, and waiting for his driver.

Minutes later the robbers arrived on board a motorcycle.

The men were clad in black shirts and denim pants. One of the perpetrators was wearing a helmet and the other was limping on his right leg and was armed with a gun, Navarro said.

“Suspect 2 got off and took the victim’s gold necklace and Rado wristwatch (worth P90,000) at gunpoint. . . [but] when the victim resisted, he fired successive shots, hitting the victim in the head and in different parts of the body,” Navarro said.

The men escaped towards Shaw Boulevard after the shooting.

Chua was rushed to Lourdes Hospital in Sta. Mesa, Manila, but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

At the morgue, police authorities found five gunshot wounds in Chua’s body—three in the left side of the torso, one in his left abdomen, and another in the left side of his cheek, the case investigator said.
