COTABATO CITY—A communist rebel was killed while two others were captured in an encounter with government soldiers on the border between Davao del Sur and North Cotabato provinces, the military reported Wednesday.

Colonel Prudencio Asto, speaking for the 6th Infantry Division, said no one was killed or wounded on the government side during the 20-minute firefight with New People’s Army  rebels in an area between Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, and Tulunan, North Cotabato, on Tuesday.

The clash occurred during a military operation aimed at checking the presence of NPA rebels in the area, he said.
