1st National Students Weightlifting C’ship set

NATIONAL Capital Region representative University of the East is expected to be given a run for their money by Mindanao entry Universidad de Zamboanga in the 1st National Students Weightlifting Championship (NSWC) slated Oct. 27 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Baldomero Estenzo, chairman of the organizing committee, said the competition will be an exciting one, especially with the two schools duking it out for top honors.

This statement was seconded by Felix Tiukinhoy, executive director of the organizing committee, who added that top athletes of this tournament will be given the chance to represent the country in the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia Federation from July 6 to 17.

“We are targeting participation in 10 sports in Kazan,” said Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) president David Ong.  “These are athletics, archery, beach volleyball, badminton, men’s basketball, chess, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis and weightlifting.

There are also plans to hold a local fencing competition that will serve as a qualifier for the Kazan Universiade. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
